1st Place Landscape and Best in Category

Well I was shocked!



I live close to the town that hold the largest county fair in our state. I've been thinking about submitting a photo to their arts & crafts contest for some time and finally did it. I submitted this photo of a local road.



I was not prepared to win 1st place in the Landscape division. Moreso, I was not prepared to win Best in Category (photography).

While I'm happy about winning and think my shot is good, there were a lot of great shots submitted. The honor of winning is worth more to me than any monetary prize.

I'm going to leave the old features up since they haven't been here very long. I'll try to post something next week with new features.

Long overdue update

Where have I been?



   It's a good question.  First, let me apologize for the old :+fav:-and-run lately.

   For the most part, I've been working.  My team was helping the Christmas side of our department with the Christmas rush.  For a company that makes products to sell for Christmas, that makes our busy season July and August.  That rush is done.  I was back to a normal 40 hour week for exactly 2 weeks.  Now, my team will begin working on Spring items for a company who will remain nameless :target:

   I'm not complaining.  Not at all.  With the economic climate, I truly am thankful to have a job.  Like many other companies; we're being forced to do more with less.

   I have a busy schedule out of work over the month or so.  We're going to see Paula Poundstone at a local club.  There is a Wild Mushroom hike.  I friend is getting married.  And...I'm going to a chili cook-off for a friends birthday.  And then it will be time to get out and see the leaves changing for fall.  I will have the camera with me for all of them.

   Since I've haven't update my journal in so long, I have quite a lot of features.  I could have easily had 3 or 4 times as many.  There are so many great people here, I find it hard to narrow the list down.  I usually like to notify people that I featured their work.  At 57 individuals, I hope everyone understands why I didn't. :D

Catch up

I've got so much news, its hard to organize it...so I'm just going to ramble. it's what I do best :D

• First, I should say thanks to all who supported me recently with the passing of my Father. I didn't make an announcement because this isn't a blog-site. A few local friends watch me here, so this is a big thanks to all of them. :bow:

• Next, My nephew who is in the US Army Reserve was called to active duty. He is currently in Iraq. There is a flag that can be flown to show you have a family member serving in an active conflict. I took the design and created a new stamp.

I never realized how many supplies soldiers count on family member to send them.

• Finally, on a purely selfish note...I purchase my first DSLR camera. After much (and I do mean much) debate, I decided to buy a Nikon D60. Here are a few of the reasons...

► I'm an amateur/hobbiest...on a budget.
► I was told that Nikon's tend to be built more on the rugged side. Since most of my shot will be outside, it was a logical conclusion.
► I decided that I could buy a killer camera body and one 15-55mm lens, or I could buy...
   ...decent body
   ...a kicking 70-300mm telephoto lens
   ...an extra battery
   ...wireless remote
   ...2 4gb SDHC memory cards
   ...4 filters (UV and Circular Polarizer for each lens). Thanks to mk87 for the suggesting accessories.
► The final, clincher, was that Nikon lenses were more matched to my interest in photography. Thanks to immauss for the initial information. I then did a lot of web research, and spent about 2 hours in-store asking tons of questions.

There were some freebies. I got a printer and bag out of the deal. The bag is OK for now, but I'll be on the lookout for a better one (hint, hint). There were also some discounts because of buying so many accessories.
